(needless to say trying to online search for info on this just yields a mess. the default result for searching for "how do I do X on Linux" is always a mess. usually you get links to unanswered forum questions)

Kara (and the rest of us) hardly ever get answers to technical questions on the fediverse without asking multiple times and I dunno if that's the fediverse to blame or if it's because it's _us_ asking

really "polyamorous" is kind of a misnomer. most people are oligamorous

there's an entire book on "chicken Marengo" and I kinda want it simply because it goes into the whole mythology behind this dish, that it's supposedly something Napoleon Bonaparte's army chef cooked up after the Battle of Marengo from whatever could be scrounged up locally

(for _chemical_ generation, that is. there's always the photochemical approach using a photosensitizing dye like rose bengal to turn triplet oxygen into singlet, but I'm talking about an approach that will work in the dark, haha)

what I'd really like is a way to use peroxymonosulfate or peroxydisulfate to generate singlet oxygen, cos these are stable salts

I dunno if I have a favorite physical constant. I mean...Boltzmann's constant is pretty cool I guess. and who doesn't like Planck's constant

anyway the idea would be (if you wanted to, like, use EDTA for complexometric determination of Mg or Ca): add ummeasured excess of BiHEDTA complex (or whatever) at a pH high enough for the Mg or Ca EDTA complexes to be stable. but Bi binds the EDTA much more strongly so basically there's no free EDTA, to start with

then electrolyze at constant current. the Bi gets reduced to metal, freeing the EDTA at a constant rate. it complexes any Mg or Ca present until it's all bound up. #chemistry

now I have a weensy bit of experience using EDTA for titration of metals in the old-fashioned way, with a buret and a visual indicator. there's some art to it...

...now, what I am curious about is whether a coulometric method can be devised. kinda hard to imagine. how do you dispense EDTA in proportion to a quantity of charge?

thought maybe...could you complex EDTA with a metal that (a) forms a really stable EDTA complex, and (b) can be reduced to metal electrolytically, freeing up the EDTA?
