what happened to the mastodon thing where picture urls would get shortened into picture icons anyway

could one just have it so picture links are a specific css class applied by the instance, so instances can do whatever they see fit (display:none, do the picture icon thing, etc)
also having them be applied in post and not show up in the compose form as well as not having them drain character limit so hard would be good too
