I'm so bothered by the phrase "the disabled"
Idek why. I call myself an autistic, a crip, but "the disabled" annoys me
@slooploon well, it does mean "not abled," so that makes sense. what about "other abled?"
@wxl no that's not the point, i'm disabled, it's calling the group of disabled people "the disabled" and not "disabled people"
@slooploon ah, yes. nullifying their humanity. not cool.
@wxl not "their". i'm a part of that group.
@slooploon good point! even while trying to be sensitive, i mess it up :(
@wxl just "sorry" is enough. gotta start learning somewhere, i understand
@slooploon sorry :)
@slooploon I agree. It's like saying " the poor"or "the homeless."
i have since figured it out.
it's because, in contrast to "disabled people", "the disabled" makes it seem like it's a defined, homogenous group that is passive & looked at from the outside.
