I was watching a letsplay of The Longest Drive and they mentioned GPS: I wonder how long GPS will keep functioning after a civilizational collapse?

Because while yeah, eventually the satellite orbits will decay, but I imagine the lack of updates will kill it faster

@foone i imagine it'll wind up functioning as a strange kind of time capsule, after buildings and streets crumble, that hey, there used to be a street here.

@wildweasel
The satellites only help you calculate coordinates, mapping is local or cloud (so, how many survivalists have offline copies of OSM afterwards :)

@wildweasel
(To be clear, it's a great concept - but the map data is, mmm, "differently fragile" than the satellites themselves. I still have a copy of USGS tiff files for the US that are from before OSM, which clearly label a schoolhouse that is no longer across the street from me... even without anything collapsing.)
