some things I've noticed as someone using a low-end laptop:

- web browsers take up a lot of system resources (obviously).
- closing web browsers takes time. if I wait, like, five minutes after closing the browser, it'll have unloaded more thoroughly than if I don't.
- some tabs behave like memory leaks. if I'm stepping away from my computer, I close my mastodon tab.
- aside: if the browser inactivates the masto tab or the computer goes to sleep, it'll drop the toots that came in while the tab wasn't actively refreshing, because fedi is push instead of pull for some reason.
- that said, I don't put the computer to sleep with the browser running. or discord, just in case. also, see above about waiting five minutes.

this is running windows 7 on a dell latitude e6410.

@packbat the web really needs to die and be replaced with something else

replace or fix web? (politics)

@Alyx tbh the web could be completely fine if web dev weren't ... uh, Like That

(mostly the toxic advertising ecosystem - I miss you, Project Wonderful - but also the ... uh, everything)

idk if that requires the web to be replaced or, like, meaningful regulation and monopoly busting and all that plus a change of culture

replace or fix web? (politics)

@packbat nah just kill it. think of everything we could get rid of at a stroke. the web is basically just an unstable buggy half-assed virtual machine at this point
