so, I got a new toy in the mail! a visible light spectrometer
el cheapo instrument. single beam, takes those square cuvettes. I ought to order up a box of the cheap plastic ones. it did come with some glass ones
@USBloveDog ebay store :=D some fly-by-night vendor, probably
but the instrument looks legit enough, and the manual is actually good
I have a number of plans for this, heh. but it's a good general device for quantitative chemical analysis, using simple color reactions
@Alyx Oh, that does seem like a fun new toy. I know that someone was using optical discs and a cell phone sensor. I'm not quite sure how good the technique is. I think the way it was working, was using specific known substances, to calibrate. Could do a bit of a look to see if I can find any further information.
@JigmeDatse ohhhh yeah! I have heard of such low tech approaches. limited, of course, but still of value
I am interested :=3
@Alyx I think it was mentioned on the GOSH chat on Matrix. I'll go ask there...
@Alyx Of course, there is a lot of activity there out of Chennai, which I think something major is going on there right now. So not sure how quickly responses are likely to come.
@JigmeDatse damn, publiclab.org is a thing I am glad to know about!
@Alyx Yeah, well I'm pretty sure that at least some of what I remember was from there.
@Alyx Bit afraid that it's a very deep rabbit hole if one is not careful...
@Alyx Where'd you order it from? That seems like it'd be cool to have, but I have no idea what I'd use it for (you seem like you have actual experiments planned for it)
