corporate media vs. collective media
@packbat well lemme ask you, what's your general opinion about using corporate media
I mean, it's not like we _like_ YouTube
re: corporate media vs. collective media
@Alyx I tend to assume it's a "no ethical consumption under capitalism" situation
like, avoiding situations where you lend your support to corporate media is supererogatory, to use one of my dad's favorite words
(...occasionally I think about how I do none of the things that any of the corporate platforms want me to do in terms of building my audience or encouraging them to chuck money around via the service or whatever else, if you want to talk about muddying the waters even further)
re: corporate media vs. collective media
@Alyx on the collective side, I think the part where streaming costs a lot of money becomes a lot more foregrounded
see https://beesbuzz.biz/blog/636-Federated-video-streaming, frex
part of why I like the fediverse is because I know where the money for instance hosting is coming from: an admin thinking "I'm getting enough out of it to put in some of my own money" and a number of users, myself included, chucking metaphorical bills into the metaphorical honesty box to keep that "some" in manageable bounds
but for streaming that might be a lot of bills people have to chuck in the honesty box
re: corporate media vs. collective media
@packbat *snorts* I think my ideal future is one where "YouTube" still exists but it's run by a pack of queer space anarcho-communists or something
"YouTube" is just a _name_, in the end. a big, heavy name, but a name
maybe it can be attached to something cool :=3
@Alyx I can't help you re: non-corporate stuff - I've never tried to figure out what the options are there, much less how to use them
