Parallax webcomic, p. 31
okay, we're feeling a bit better now
page thirty-one
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/page-31
nice page layout here, with a horizontal strip in the middle used to illustrate a flashback
Lomax is at wit's end. they try to pull off the strange new outfit and it won't come off (I always wonder about that stuff, with tokusatsu outfits...like, do the clothes even come off?)
in the bathroom mirror they look at the glowing pink lozenge now in their forehead, baffled
Parallax webcomic, p. 31
flashback time: Lomax remembers Prof. Rodgers holding out the little wooden box and saying, "if you really want to change, this might be useful. you can talk to me."
hm
"Mr. Rogers!" says Lomax. ("Rogers", note, not "Rodgers". another slip?) unsteadily the kid fumbles for the slip of paper with a phone number
Parallax webcomic, p. 31
page thirty-two
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/page-32
Lomax hides in the bathroom again, squatting with both butt and feet on the toilet bowl lid (you know I don't think any of us has ever done that, sat on the toilet completely off the ground, but I won't swear to it)
Lomax looks like utter hell
they dial the number (which I DID dial myself btw, although I was pretty sure it was invalid, and it was)
"Mr. Rogers?" (again it's wrong) "I need help"
Parallax webcomic, p. 33 (argh argh argh)
ok, we're at a title card, basically
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/end-of-chapter-one
"end of chapter one" although the subtitle says "0: Up Is The Only Way" so maybe that was really chapter zero? haha
a signature says "M. Falke". got no idea who that is even though I've met at least a couple of the people who've worked on this
we've all had like, twenty names apiece at least
all of us in involved in this goddamn tire fire
Parallax webcomic, p. 33 (argh argh argh)
bleh, anyway
central figure is the new improved Lomax, in anime garb, the lozenge sending rays of light out in the form of an X, dividing up the page
to their left, Prof. Rodgers with the wooden box
to their right, two figures...parents perhaps? the better-seen figure definitely looks like mom. (we've got a weird memory when it comes to faces cos of the aphantasia thing)
Parallax webcomic, p. 33 (for real) (violence)
oh, THIS is page thirty-three. the previous page doesn't count as having a page number I guess
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/page-33
unknown distance later in time and space. it's outdoors, it looks like anyway, and we're in some forested place. the crescent Moon is in the sky in a manner that's either highly stylized or meant to be alien *shrugs*
Lomax has fallen to the forest floor amid the pine cones. they're bleeding superficially.
Parallax webcomic, p. 33 (for real) (violence)
hrm, what's next is difficult easily to describe. Lomax appears to have fallen among a population of some vaguely humanoid creatures, taller than Lomax by far, and bearing dark cubes for heads and other cubes incorporated into their bodies in other places. there seem to be a number of them about
a frame shows us, slightly surprisingly, Prof. Rodgers. he's shouting: "Lomax, you gotta move! LOMAX!"
Lomax seems not to hear. they look sweaty and sick
Parallax webcomic, p. 33 (for real) (violence)
page thirty-four
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/page-34
Lomax looks up to see one of the cube-headed figures looming very tall over them. they dash away just as the creature aims a blow
Lomax sprints away through the forest in desperation. from an unknown distance away Prof. Rodgers shouts, "good! get some distance and--"
"then what!" retorts Lomax
Parallax webcomic, p. 35 (violence)
bleh. let's keep playing this ridiculous game, what else is there to do
(if all this ends up being even remotely close to what I think it's really all about, there's a whole lot of RL people I'm gonna wanna kick in the fucking 'nads...*sighs* I shouldn't talk that way but goddamn I don't like being jerked around.)
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/page-35
one of the cube-headed creatures gets a bead on Lomax and starts charging for them
Parallax webcomic, p. 35 (violence)
there's hints of "digitization" in the way the creature is drawn, like maybe we're in a simulation, or the creature is not completely in Lomax's world, or something. impossible to tell
Prof. Rodgers shouts a warning to Lomax from behind a tree
Lomax tries to outrun the creature but it manages to get a good one in--or possibly a different creature gets the jump on them
we see cloth tear across Lomax's abdomen, and Lomax grits their teeth in pain
Parallax webcomic, p. 36 (extreme violence)
it's bad. page thirty-six
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/page-36
whatever creature has managed to hurt Lomax has drawn blood. Prof. Rodgers watches impotently from a distance, able only to say Lomax's name
the creature backhands Lomax away from themself, flinging Lomax's body hard into a tree
Lomax falls limp to the ground. some bone is broken
Rodgers shouts desperately "you can do this!" DO WHAT
Parallax webcomic, p. 37 (violence, death)
page thirty-seven
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/page-37
Lomax lies face-up on the ground. they can't move their body. they're crying, fear has a tight grip on them
some distance away they see one of the cube-headed creatures giving a loud call, as it seems. "I'm going to die," thinks Lomax
Prof. Rodgers keeps shouting "encouragement". "you're wearing the raiment! you can do this!" (FUCK OFF Rodgers why is this even _happening_)
Parallax webcomic, p. 38
and we cut...to breakfast
ugh
page thirty-eight
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/page-38
Lomax looks as they did before, red shirt, brown hair. they also look completely wasted
mom greets them in customary fashion. Lomax is sick and hungover and is barely keeping up with the morning routine
finally, a good look at dad. young-looking guy, with a moustache
mom is worried. "you don't have a fever do you?"
Parallax webcomic, p. 38
dad says something about Lomax missing their favorite show
"what's it called? 'Anthrax'?" says mom
"Panthrax", Lomax corrects. they're clearly put out by having missed it, whatever it is
porridge (porridge?? not oatmeal? who literally eats porridge these days) is served
and everyone shushes everyone else to listen to some news bulletin
Parallax webcomic, p. 39 (death)
bleh
whatever else is true, I gotta keep going forward through this. if nothing else it's breaking us of the long-standing habit of never reading comics for more than a little bit before dropping them. maybe we actually stand a chance of getting through "Gunnerkrigg Court", after all this is done, whatever "this" even is
okay, the thirty-ninth step
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/page-39
oof, the TV news is bad. a seven-year-old (seven!) girl has been found dead
Parallax webcomic, p. 39 (death)
apparently there's some kind of archaeological site west of the town of "Silverdalen" (again, that's just an odd name to me, and reminiscent of Silverdale, WA) and the body was found there. no sign of physical trauma
Lomax suggests the news is almost teasing people into checking out the site for themselves. "don't do that," says dad from the couch. Lomax is on edge and wonders to themself why dad would even bring the idea up. "I've never been a troublemaker."
Parallax webcomic, p. 40
like Chara, I too am dedicated to continuity :=D
so, page forty
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/page-40
Lomax is strolling around King's Park and complaining of photophobia. "normally I like the sun but today it hurts my eyes" (remember they complained of their vision not being right after the whole, uh, pink lozenge henshin thing)
and then boom they accidentally walk into the back of a weird person who genuinely looks like the sort of weird guy you'd run into, in a toku show
Parallax webcomic, p. 41
page forty-one
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/page-41
Lomax is out of breath, panting and drooling a bit as you do. they apparently made it to the parking lot of the school, because they spot Dr. Rodgers, whistling and getting into (or out of) their sensible compact car
so is it "Rodgers" or "Rogers"? I dunno if the comic knows for sure, haha
"MR. ROGERS [sic] I NEED TO TALK ABOUT--"
Rodgers instantly shushes Lomax, and says some words meant to reassure
Parallax webcomic, p. 42
finally at the most important page, page forty-two. surely this page will answer all the questions
of course it doesn't
(Chara, or Kara rather, arrived at the knowledge she was trans, at the age of forty-two, how's that for a coincidence)
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/page-42
Lomax sighs, grumbles about not being able to think straight, and tries to slog through their course load. math, chemistry, language come and go, while Lomax's gloom deepens
Parallax webcomic, p. 42
oh, forgot Biology class. we get a clip of the professor's introduction to her lecture here, giving Lomax and the other students a bright cheery introduction to the world of "Bacterica" [sic], which she later correctly names as the bacteria
(sorry, my eye goes RIGHT to little slips like that)
the biology prof mentions that without our symbiotic relationship with bacteria we would not even be alive and I'm sure this passage is not meant to symbolize a thing to us
Parallax webcomic, p. 43, a word on Seattle postfurry bullshit
all the fun's gone out of this. but we're not in this for fun
you know
I haven't any clue really what's been up with us. whether anyone we've known personally has been _involved_. got nothing to go on really
we've felt like it's been plausible to assume that these people who've collectively hurt us so many times have been making a kind of GAME of it all. having fun pushing us around
maybe because they feel threatened somehow
Parallax webcomic, p. 43, a word on Seattle postfurry bullshit
we've been on the receiving end of a lot of weird misdirected _rage_. and never gotten one solid hint that anyone involved, INCLUDING the authors of this fucking thing I'm working through right now, have changed their minds about Chara and the rest of us
so far as I know, guys, you all still fucking despise the lot of us and still think you have reasons to hurt us. and you know what? we're hurting, all right
Parallax webcomic, p. 43, a word on Seattle postfurry bullshit
and if that's NOT all you assholes' fault, in some way--because honestly I can't think of anyone else in town who'd have both the ability and the motive to do some kind of magical woo on us that would cause us lots of pain--then well you're always free to tell us that directly
stop being such fucking cowards and we'll start having nicer things to say about you and your shit
well
with that out of the way let's get back to routine
Parallax webcomic, p. 43, a word on Seattle postfurry bullshit
page forty-three
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/page-43
Lomax goes to the "extracurricular" class, which I guess is some kind of review section or study hall or whatever. detention, but for college kids. Prof. Rodgers is there and Lomax immediately tackles him: "I need some answers." but Rodgers nods to the one other student there and shuts the conversation down.
Lomax sits at a desk, fuming, and Rodgers says something about help with math
Parallax webcomic, p. 44
page forty-four. I'm up to Chara's current age, hahaha
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/page-44
the other student leaves detention with a smile and a cheery "bye Mr. Rogers [sic]!"
*sighs* okay at this point I'll just have to write off the earlier "Rodgers" spelling as a slip
fine, it's Prof. Rogers now. anyway. Lomax tentatively approaches Rogers about having that confidential talk and Rogers says sure! they'll talk at Rogers's _home_
Lomax is...less than pleased at the prospect
Parallax webcomic, p. 45
page forty-five
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/page-45
from the interior of Prof. Rogers's sensible car we see that Lomax is huddled in the back seat, like you do when you're in a stranger's car and you don't wanna get too close. Rogers comments on this, with a smile
"how far is it to your place?" Lomax asks. Rogers explains that he lives out in the suburbs west of Silverdalen (west again, huh), and we see the city in an establishing frame
Parallax webcomic, p. 45
so "Silverdalen" is big enough to have suburbs, and what we see in the frame makes the city look fairly sizeable. that makes sense given the authors, honestly; they're big city folx, like me. but Silverdalen is hemmed in by high mountains, in a way that Seattle isn't
in a center strip we see some lyrics for Kenny Loggins's "Danger Zone". Lomax asks what the hell the music is
finally we arrive, with Rogers, at a small single-family home. Rogers's home
Parallax webcomic, p. 46
on to forty-six
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/page-46
inside Prof. Rogers's home. it looks boring and suburban, but to Lomax it "feels off". and who knows, maybe there's something a little too pristine and neat about it
Rogers is being effusively polite, offering food or drink, Lomax at last accepts tea and Rogers goes off to the kitchen to prepare it. sitting in the living-room, Lomax notices what looks like a plain gold ring. dun dun DUN
Parallax webcomic, p. 47
forty-seven
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/page-47
"you found my old wedding ring!" Rogers says, with dubious sincerity. Lomax is flustered: "I didn't know you were married." Rogers corrects them: he _had_ been married, he says, but has been a widower for seven years now. but it's OK, he reassures the alarmed Lomax!
"I'm living."
then it's down to business. Rogers knows that Lomax wants an explanation for the strange "dreams" or whatever happened with the henshin sequence and after
Parallax webcomic, p. 48
forty-eight.
https://www.parallaxcomic.com/comic/page-48
this page is mostly infodump and rather standard stuff, especially for a toku nerd like me. so Rogers reveals the result of Lomax's scared phone call at the end of the henshin sequence that completes chapter one (chapter zero?) of this comic. apparently Rogers instructed Lomax in how to take the "raiment" off, the lozenge-themed garb that Lomax was wearing after the henshin and couldn't get off themself
Parallax webcomic, p. 41
"look, I know this is scary and confusing"
then at the bottom half of the page, Prof. Rodgers (I'm sticking with the contention that he's Paul Rodgers's cousin or something) gets Very Serious[tm] and the frame goes purple for some reason and promises that answers are coming. in _private_. how reassuring!
then Rodgers grabs Lomax's shoulders (also reassuring!) and says, basically, "see me in extracurricular class" and walks off
