corporate recycling infrastructure is crap
anyone surprised by this sort of thing?
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/jun/17/recycled-plastic-america-global-crisis
I've always kinda known that municipal plastics recycling was a really dodgy business. but yeah, it's real bad
ugh. Kara, you really need to start thinking about how to handle all your garbage on-site
cw concentration camps
@garfiald Pres. Obama basically punting the issue of the hideously illicit Guantanamo prison was proof enough that American liberals are more or less okay with concentration camps
Hey #MastoAdmin, is there any documentation outlining the commands available in tootctl? It seems shocking to me that I can't find anything on the subject online outside of peacemeal changelog updates and toots requesting fuctionality.
@Alyx All programming could be considered dialectical between a human's desire to get a goal across and the computer (a very literal, very logical, perversely pedantic creature that).
Perhaps more useful to your question there is a small community of programmers that use/prefer what's called "literate" style esp. focused on persuasive essays with code embedded that feels quite dialectal when done well. But that mostly just recenters people in the above existing "debate".
programming, salt about logicbros
@ky0ko I am totally blue skying here
programming, salt about logicbros
@ky0ko kinda wondering how that would play out, as a method of computer programming
programming, salt about logicbros
@ky0ko yeah I am being kinda vague
we tend to think of programming in this very centralized way. a string of commands, one after the other. either they're executed or they go wrong
it's very much the way logicbros regard thought itself to work, as purely deductive. a string of logical inferences, and either they're correct and "logical" or they're not
but reality is more about dialogues, about alternating between point and counterpoint
so I am gonna ask a silly conceptual #programmer question
I am gonna make up a term here
is _dialectical_ computer programming a thing
@dirk good luck :=3
oh, and the thirst?
"and the porous Vycor plugs are cut from lengths of 1/8-in.-diameter porous Vycor rod (_thirsty_ glass or Corning Vycor No. 7930), available from the Electronic Parts Department, Corning Glass Works, Houghton Park, Corning, New York, 14830."
so there ya go. glass can be thirsty.
so far as I know you can't really substitute anything for mercury, when you're using it as a liquid electrode. mercury's electrochemical properties are pretty unique to it
what's the alternative anyway? for closing these small rings, Wurtz coupling with sodium metal, usually a crap reaction, is actually good. but the electrolytic procedure probably has more selectivity and control.
I've vaguely heard of, like, activated non-alkali metals being used. or samarium diiodide
ok trying the random word thing with _Organic Syntheses_ again. the word of the day is "thirsty"
and it matches one article, wow
http://www.orgsyn.org/demo.aspx?prep=CV6P0153
cyclization of 1,3-dihaloalkanes to cyclopropanes by an electrolytic method! (also 1,4-dihaloalkanes yield cyclobutanes but it's not as good)
preparative electrochemistry is always one of those things I kinda look at with a slightly jaundiced eye. you need specialized equipment. and, in this case, a mercury-pool cathode. bleh
fediverse archive setting idea
"Third party archive permissions":
[Y/N] Boosting accounts may preserve content in their account archives
[Y/N] Mentioned servers may preserve content in threads
[Y/N] Archivists may preserve content if anonymized
[Y/N] Automated tools may preserve content.
idk probably some others
mostly I was thinking that the first one would be nice because Tumblr and Twitter defaulted to that being on and that gave me offline access to some content that's gone now
re: solarpunk...?
@astrum @kara_dreamer@plural.cafe yeah that's a thing innit
we've pushed microcontrollers and wireless transceiving into literally everything. we use this crap to turn lights on
re: solarpunk...?
@Alyx @kara_dreamer by requiring less from our machines.
the supply chain for discrete transistors is shorter and more flexible than that for ICs, and the same is true to a lesser extent of less complex ICs. Nothing is stopping us from all using a slightly souped up Z80 except that software fucking sucks
re: solarpunk...?
@astrum @kara_dreamer@plural.cafe I am not unopposed in principle, but I want more acknowledgement of the challenges
how are we gonna build tech stuff when the corporate infrastructure that supplies all our materials and components breaks down or becomes effectively inaccessible
can someone point me to resources regarding modding doom?
and also tell me which is the best doom engine to use?
please and thank ❤
"Am I mansplaining?" flowchart description

- She has more. => Definitely mansplaining.
- About the same, or I'm not sure. => Probably mansplaining.
- Yes, by a fair amount. => next question:
Would most men with her education & experience already know this?
- Yes. => Probably mansplaining.
- No. => next question:
Did you ask if she needed it explained?
- I did not ask. => Probably mansplaining.

Instance stuff / Patreon!
Hello,
I have created a Patreon to help cover the costs to run / hopefully upgrade our hosting plan and grow our community! Like I said, I first made this instance literally just with the intention of the joke in the domain name but I think it could have potential to become a nice latinx community instance. So feel free to donate so I don't have to charge people to get in da club, and maybe 1 day grow past masto.host!
