re: portland pol / alt-right / racist history
Gonna take a few minutes to prepare and then start the prestream for my "Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes" stream! Game itself will begin on the hour, in about twenty-five mintues.
nineteenth-century oratory, slavery, us politics
The Root published the complete text of Frederick Douglass's 1852 July 4th oration - commonly entitled "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?" - on its website today for anyone who wants to give it a read: https://www.theroot.com/what-to-the-slave-is-the-fourth-of-july-1836083536
July 4, Hawaii, Independence
Imagine a Native American community who had a Disneyland-like resort built over their villages and ancestor's graves, the people made to do bastardizations of their sacred dances, wear mock 'sexy feather headresses' and entertain the rich tourists for starvation wages, 12 hours a day 7 days a week, living sardine-packed 20-to-a-house. And then be arrested for speaking their own language. It'd be an outrage, right? But that is just everyday life, in US-colonized Hawaii
hm, kinda wonder if other related compounds would also work. like, naphthoquinones (make one out of menadione, haha--the Vitamin K3 electrode!)
wanna try to make some p-benzoquinone, and some chloranil (that's tetrachloro-p-benzoquinone, and it's the end result of vigorous active chlorine oxidation of a lot of aromatic precursors)
you can make pH electrodes that exploit the redox couple between quinones and their corresponding hydroquinone, q.v. "quinhydrone electrode". the parent quinhydrone electrode starts degrading in high pHs because hydroquinone is soluble in alkali, but the chloranil counterpart should be better

I think that a dedicated scanner probably gives "better" results. And the question is whether the results you are looking for justify it.
has anyone ever tried ring-opening olefin metathesis polymerization with terpenes? there's some work on making useful polymers from limonenes etc. that I've seen but going through the radical polymerization route with, like, aluminum alkyls and stuff like that
someone worked out a solvent extraction method for _lithium_?! of course it uses some strange bespoke ligand, a substituted pyrazolone (so think, like, antipyrine only fancier) *and* a phosphate ester (which tend to be useful in metal ion extractions, cf. how actinides can be fractionated with tributyl phosphate extraction)
fwiw I was thinking of how solvent-extraction methods could be good for analytical techniques using my shiny new spectrophotometer

listen. we all know, deep within our hearts, that leia organa is the woman that, in another destiny, would be the most terrifying PTA president any world has ever seen.
and that luke skywalker is definitely the one who thinks his incense totally covers up the weed smell but in fact it just smells like incense and also weed.
han's the one growing the weed.
or rather he thinks he did, chewie goes out there every night to actually do the horticulture bc he's the one good at it, but doesn't tell
@Alyx I like the headcanon, it probably works a lot better than what I actually had. on the other hand, it's probably a lot harder to make a fin do both "athletic ponytail that won't bother me", "punk as fuck mohawk", and "long un-gelled mohawk that falls over my ex-eye so I look slightly less like a pirate knight halloween costume from the dump"
