I asked a friend to spoil me on the ending of the Kingdom Hearts mobile game (Union Cross) because she clearly had some feelings about it

And I’m still thinking about it days later, because while there’s some stuff I didn’t really get I still kinda want to scream about the stuff I did. Just, wow, I’m amazed they did some of those twists.

I’m not even into Kingdom Hearts, so I might have some of this wrong, but from my understanding:

In the final cutscene, your character (not you — this’ll be important later) has to choose between going to “sleep” or dying and getting reincarnated, which is already darker than I expected any Disney tie-in game to ever get.

Those who go to sleep have their hearts eaten by their cute animal companions to protect them, which turns them into Dream Eaters.

My friend was already pretty flabbergasted at this, pointing to cutscenes in the main games that hit way differently knowing you’re basically dealing with the spirits of comatose kids.

Ah, but the game gives your character the choice, not you. So *your* character dies

and gets reincarnated

as Xehanort

So your cute Kingdom Heartsona that you spent years customizing and getting attached to turns out to be THE MAIN VILLAIN OF THE ENTIRE SERIES TO DATE.

The series has been running for almost 20 years now. Imagine if you got the first game as a kid, and you kept up with the series this whole time. And you find out after all that time that the main villain the protagonists have been fighting this entire time… is, basically, YOU.

Wow.

I’m impressed.

(Again, I’m not a Kingdom Hearts fan myself, so sorry if I got some of the details wrong! But I checked the fan wiki to at least make sure I had the broad strokes right. I’m just… amazed, and feel like I have to scream about it to SOMEONE. XD)
