Hey everyone remember that Batman movie where Batman turned everyone's cellphones into a masd surveillance system and then, because he was an incorruptible hero and that power was too creepy even for Batman, turned it off and never used it again.

Even though that is in fact what he did, by way of making it self-destruct.
My point, yes.
That happened in a 'dark, gritty' movie ten years ago and already it seems wildly, naively quaint and optimistic, from another time almost. We've just sort of collectively shrugged and accepted that no, the surveillance machine is now pervasive and will never, ever be turned off.
