@sir how does word processing translate to social networking at all?

@ThatSoftwareBat it's all the same shit. Proprietary document formats or proprietary protocols, there's no difference

@sir

A social network isn’t really a protocol. It’s just some software. And an open-source social network can still collect people’s data.

There’s nothing stopping someone from forking Mastodon and setting up a rouge instance. Most people won’t check.

@ThatSoftwareBat a social network isn't a protocol only as a business decision. Social networks embrace interopability as a hook to get users in but throw it away as soon as it's not necessary.

But some people will... and when it comes out that someone has been, then switching to another is possible with little fanfare. The same does not hold of Facebook et al.

You sure about that? Facebook and co. have disclosed that this was happening for years in their privacy policy. No one read it. No one cared. The problem isn't the source code; it's the people.

@ThatSoftwareBat but users on Facebook have no where else to go. They leave behind all of their friends and family if they leave.

@ThatSoftwareBat
In other words, to attain true freedom from corporate, Open Source is necessary but not sufficient.
