Discussing transphobia

Of course the arguments against letting trans people decide which bathroom to use is always ridiculous and terrible, but the one I’m stuck on today goes something like this:

“Would you really feel safe with your daughter using the bathroom next to a six-foot, burly man with a beard??”

Assuming we removed the idea of gender policing from bathrooms, why would I *not* feel safe with that?

Why would I assume that a man, or any person, is dangerous simply because they are large and have facial hair? Most of the large bearded men I know are among the sweetest people I’ve ever met. The assumption of danger from them is based on nothing more than the difference in size (and, for some reason, follicle activity).

I’d never tell people not to have *some* caution when in public, but this society has an epidemic of fear of Other People based solely on appearance. That state of mind is patently ridiculous once you get to know folks who aren’t plagued with it.
