Sappy end-of-year post

Reflecting on things as one does this time of year, and I find myself thinking about how many people I know who are working hard to heal themselves and others. There are so may people I can name who are being candid about their experience with mental health, or creating art to let other people know they're not alone, or creating art just to bring something beautiful into the world, or using their cleverness and observations of our absurd world to make people laugh… (1/2)

so in short

- sleep when you want, as much as you want

- different sleep times are a normal human variation

- too much sleep isn't bad for you

- naps are good

- sleep is THE most important factor for keeping your brain functional

- doctors are full of shit and reproduce social stigmatisation of normal differences

- sleep time variations are artificially pathologised

- they turn into real disabilities because they deviate from the supported norm, see: social model of disability

Hey cis friends, have you ever fantasized about being a different gender? Any context: sex or cool clothes or whatever, no shame attached.

Trans folks commonly think everyone questions their gender, but the few cis folks I've asked either say no, or only a tiny handful of times.

If none of these choices make sense for you, my DMs are open.

Trans friends, please sit this one out, but please do boost for reach.

They should make a Super Mario game based on the Super Mario Bros (1993) movie

There is no reason apart from “keeping things PG-13” for people in sci-fi and fantasy to not say fuck. If humans exist and they’re speaking English, or “common language that just so happens to sound like English,” whatever made-up swear word that gets used ends up being a fuck equivalent anyway. Let science fiction and fantasy characters say fuck.

@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon It may not be hibernation technically, but if you want me to come outside you’d better have a good fxckin reason

POCAHONTAS: 🎶 can you paint with all the colors of the wind 🎵

@UnnecessaryNeon It did accurately register a raise in heart rate, so — I guess so!

I started wearing a new Fitbit today — the first one I’ve had in years — and it registered a 20-minute period of “Moderate Activity” during the climactic scene of Glass Onion.

Hermes: neither an illegitimate mortal nor a simple contrarian but a secret third thing
(From “Trickster Makes This World,” Lewis Hyde auth.)

@erkhyan this makes really clear the relationship between recognizing one of The Good People and the uncanny valley; never thought about it before but it makes a lot of sense.
And it brings back the question of why we evolved with this instinctive response for recognizing something not quite human.

It’s funny how recognizing AI art nowadays is just the same old rules as recognizing the fae in old tales.

“Count the fingers, count the knuckles, count the teeth, check the shadows…”

… and under NO circumstances should you make deals with their kind.

It’s beginning to look a lot like fuck this 🎶
