Autism question
So it seems to me like I'm most likely autistic but there is one thing that makes me kinda confused. I keep hearing that you have to have symptoms since you were a child, but I can't really remember having any except sensory issues.
It's not like I got more symptoms as I got older necessarily, but a lot of the symptoms I have now would seem normal for a child I think, I just didn't grow out of them I guess.
Making "weird" movements or repeating topics or words isn't too weird for a child I think, especially since I am indifferent to eye contact and I liked to talk to other children so the "obvious" signs weren't there. Having sensory meltdowns is also not too uncommon for NT children I think, or at least something that looks similar from an outside perspective (tantrums).
Is this normal?
Autism question - my current symptoms (1/?)
For anyone curious here are some symptoms that I have, even though I made a similar post earlier I have discovered new ones:
- sensory issues are a big one. Sometimes they're bad enough that I can't sleep from the bedsheets touching me and I often have sensory meltdowns.
- I have trouble remembering and recognising faces (and names for that matter)
- I have volume control issues (yelling by accident when I need to be quiet)
- I sometimes just go mute if I'm stressed out or overstimulated
- I get extremely stressed out if someone moves something in my room (even just making my bed) and it makes me have meltdowns
- I sometimes have trouble understanding what is being said (some kind of auditory processing issue)
- I have trouble controlling my tone and often accidentally use the wrong tone for something
- I have "stimmy" behaviours such as flapping my arms a little bit or jumping up and down when I'm happy or rocking when I'm upset
re: autism
@Some_Person you're definitely describing all the things i'd generally associate with autism. like, if you wanted to call yourself autistic i'd say go for it? i can't speak for you/your personal experience, so i'm not gonna tell you you Are autistic, but you definitely seem to have described as much autistic behaviour as many other autistic folks. in the end, though, it's up to you whether to actually use the word
