The time my landlord in Seattle emailed me at work in the middle of the afternoon to blame me for the constant weed stench on our floor, even though across the hall from me where a pair of white college students who were home all day long

"Hm...who is smoking all this weed at all hours of the day? The students on break, or the guy who works a 9 to 5 job? I say the guy who works a 9 to 5 because he's trans and latinx and from New York. New York is scary!"

I knew it was the students because you could walk by their door and tell. They were such dumbasses, they had the freedom to smoke in public without being arrested.

When I moved back, I had to email the landlord a couple of times to get my deposit back. I made sure to remind him the first time that he had a time limit to respond before I could take him to court for not returning it.

The worst thing about Seattle was how lily white everything was, combined with how lacking in self awareness they all were about it. Staten Island has a similar population and ethnic breakdown, but is acutely aware of it. Seattle swears it's a very progressive town.

And the thing is, I did smoke weed. I smoked a lot of weed. That job was stressful. I just didn't do it inside, furthermore I lacked the power to be at my job working AND at my apartment smoking weed at the same time.
