I'm listening to an episode of Unspooled about "Annie Hall" and realizing how similar "Eternal Sunshine" is, except somehow Jim Carrey's character, whose name I can't even remember, is somehow less charismatic than Alvie.

It fucks me up that a lot of the media that I consumed as a young adult and shaped me was made by creeps like Woody Allen. Not because it makes me feel impure, but because it makes me feel manipulated. It's upsetting to think about how I was able to look past things that are clearly wrong, due to identifying with pieces of work that were designed to hook me.

Listening to clips is making me think Griffin McElroy's comic persona some sort of Appalachian Woody Allen, which both tracks and is something I'm not sure what to do with.

The way Woody hits, "We never have any laughs anymore, is the problem," is both a very Yiddish-influenced sentence construction, and very Griffin.

Like, oddly, it's less the nerdy neuroticism, as much as the vocal cadences and Alvie's more surreal punchlines. Like, Griffin would not make a joke about polymorphic perversity, not least because it's 2019. But he would totally make a joke with his wife about feeling up her teeth and kneecaps.
