I came out as nonbinary to someone who lives in the village over Facebook because she called me a girl. Didn't hear any more about it at the time. A few weeks later, she gave us a bereavement card that included this:

2 days ago: audio is leaked saying that zuckerberg is extremely mad over the democratic candidates trying to push for breaking up facebook

6 hours ago: facebook quietly changes policy about false and misleading info, saying political ads are no longer fact-checked. at about the same time Trump begins to put up false and misleading ads

it's no longer "the algorithm", social media is being intentionally manipulated to push for political situations where the rich stay in power

never expect any proxy set up by a western power to ever be remotely democratic by any means because it's flat out never in the interests of said western power. and you wonder why the U.S. is so bad at "statebuilding" when literally every incentive is to have a stable, authoritarian ally rather than an unpredictable democracy on its hands.
