That makes them feel smug and vindicated.

They can claim you're just whining about stuff they can personally blame you for, which not only takes the heat off them, but makes them feel superior to you for not being such a whiner and a loser.

People who say "If you don't like it, leave!" tend to get very angry when you leave.

They just expect what they said to be taken as a threat. You're supposed to shrink in fear and admit that you're wrong because you don't want to really leave them.
