I read the docs. Not manpages, those are too hard. But if there is a documentation webpage it looks readable I try to go through it. It takes a lot of time, but I have to do it.
Web apps lack a readable surface. Configuration is usually scattered. Feature pages only consistency is being too affected by marketing.
Also, for apps in general, I also read the settings. Like all the settings pages. I guess I am scanning the surface of the tool/app to become aware of the features.
