"THERE'S GOING TO BE A FORK WHERE PEOPLE JUST WANT TO CREATE A 'SAFE' MASTODON"

i
...okay?
i don't see how this is an issue

fedidrama

the federation will still work and people will be connected to who they want to be connected to
(perhaps maybe more people just want to feel safe...?)

@boots

I thought that... well, this isn't just an "undocumented feature" but an intentional, foundational part of federating.

Like, the whole purpose of distributed centralization is so that each instance can decide on their own culture, share a federation with compatible cultures, and not interact with the incompatible ones.

The whole point of federating is so that there WILL be forks!

@boots
Well. I can't speak for everyone on this but I'll lend a bit of my personal experience as to why it could be 'bad'. (I don't actually disagree with the goal)
The methods of creating a 'safe space' that seem to be popular (awoo's defederation list in particular) mean that by necessity my ability to choose an alternate gatekeeper is significantly diminished if I value talking to my friends. It would be bad that I was coerced into complicity with these practices.

fedidrama

@Irick honestly what i think should happen is that there shouldn't be an admin instance block list
instead, there should be a default blocklist for users that admins can push updates to

@boots
I don't think it's a bad idea but as I'm reading more of Towards a Theory of Network Gatekeeping the more that I'm seeing that the function of gatekeeper doesn't strictly revolve around the technical skill hierarchies though they are a component of it. Without functional discourse of acceptable behavior and power consciousness we'll just see defacto gatekeepers arise. I firmly believe we need to create highly visible civil dialog and accept amiable disagreement.

fedidrama

@boots
To be more clear. I mean gatekeepers with coercive power, rather than ones who can/do speak as equals.

fedidrama

@Irick @boots I'll second this opinion: awoo's cool kids club list means that if you don't want to make parallel accounts and boost yourself between them constantly, you have to find a small instance and hope it doesn't grow large enough to get noticed and told to implement the blacklist or get kicked out of the cool kids club.
