@bea ah yeah, the default group for i3 (assuming you use the sourcelist they give) usually installs dmenu and a few other nice lil things by default

i personally use terminator instead of rxvt because it basically is a terminal emulator with tmux built-in (allows splitting panes via context menu, opening new tabs, etc)

lightdm (the default ubuntu login manager) should automatically detect whatever you install and log you into it

my current way of installing linux is "install ubuntu for desktop, and then uninstall the ubuntu-desktop package and everything under unity-*" which works pretty well for setting up another WM

federation is dumb

basically groups are treated like rss feeds (like users), so you have to "join" (read: follow) them to be able to be subbed to all their posts

gnu social has groups you can invoke via bangtags (as i like to call them)
so if you're interested in biking, you "join" the biking group, and then you just use it's bangtag: !biking
if you "join" the group, it'll appear in your timeline by default
