So, kids, what's the moral of the XZ story?

If you're going to backdoor something, make sure that your changes don't impact its performance. Nobody cares about security - but if your backdoor makes the thing half a second slower, some nerd is going to dig it up.

It's April 1st. That means it's time for me to log off of the Internet for the next 24 hours.

My autism and this day do not mix well.

But now that that's fixed, I just need to get some other Windows operating systems installed and I'll hopefully be good to go. Other good news is that the Windows Archive's big software pack is almost ready for an update!

My main testing rig gave up the ghost. I ordered a replacement motherboard and this past week or so I've been troublehsooting the silly thing, as it kept freezing on me.I finally figured out that it was a setting I selected when installing chipset drivers. No turbo mode for me I guess.

Those of you who follow the Windows Archive project might have noticed the hiatus. This partially because all of my testing equipment has been either inadequate or broke. (Continued in replies: 1/3?)

"Wow, that reminds me of Tim and Eric!"

I found a cool site dedicated to archiving information and software for the Franklin Bookman, one of the first ereader-like devices.

Gatorade is just fancy kool-aide that's socially acceptable for adults to drink.

Don't @ me.

@cuddle Would be great if that worked on older systems. Frogfind is great, but it only prints out text versions of websites.

@dankwraith I feel that. Time to put on the noise cancelling headphones.

@rootcompute

That is honestly just 80% of the Internet in general. A lot of people get caught in a loop and talk about the same things ad nauseum partly because they want engagement with others but don't have anything new to say. I've mostly left reddit for this reason.

@mavica_again keep in mind that some of these bands are more ska influenced than ska: Operation Ivy, Dancehall Crashers, Oingo Boingo is pretty similar to some of madnesses songs but they're more experimental new wave, and when I'm in the mood for silly music I sometimes listen to some of the Aquabats earlier songs.

Seeing as my birthday passed, it's about time to update my bio and make a new intro.
I'm Caz! I'm a transwoman in her mid 30's. My main hobby is archiving old software. I joined mastodon to help explore my identity and help rebuild my soul so I can understand more of who I am as a person. I hope to get into more artistic hobbies in the future!

@1Bit Is it possible to get on globaltalk using OS 9? The only System 7 era machine I've got is out of commission.

Journey to replace Windows 98 Rig 3/?) figured out where legacy USB support is, found out the previous mobo owner disabled hard drive detection for some reason, figured out one of my hd's died, found a good cf card instead, and now windows 98 is installing!
