I said I'd logged off for the night but I'm logging back on to share the news that in less than 12 hours we hit $100,000 to support the Texas Observer team. Here's an update from @jamescanup (former fundraiser for TXO) on why we are increasing the goal to $200K in the hopes it will convince the board to keep our doors open.

We're so immensely grateful to everyone who has donated or shared already. 🤠gofundme.com/f/laid-off-texas-

One of the leading independent news outlets on the Fediverse, the Texas Observer, unexpectedly finds itself having to fight to stay open.

They've been a progressive news source since 1954, and have recently been promoting the Fediverse as a way for news media to escape corporate capture.

If you want to help them stay alive, here are some options:

- Give a donation at gofundme.com/f/laid-off-texas-

- Boost their appeal for help at texasobserver.social/@TexasObs

- Follow them at @TexasObserver

Heads up: If you're a Comcast/Xfinity user, check your bank for suspicious charges.

I got two fraudulent debits on a virtual card number which has never been disclosed to any merchant other than Comcast.

Forgot that there’s a TNG episode from THIRTY-THREE years ago where Data lets his child choose their gender

I just read an article that said that half of remote workers are the cause for increased housing prices but like... Weren't we kind of forced into remote work for a bit? And aren't some people only able to do remote work for accessibility reasons? And yet they're like "oh yeah, be mad at the remote workers for your high rent" like it isn't landlords' and legislators' faults that it's so high.

An executive order issued by Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs Friday prohibits hair-based discrimination against state employees and contractors in the workplace and public schools. The order was inspired by the CROWN Act, which was enacted by Tucson and Tempe in 2021.

Today is the International Day of Forests. On this day we like to highlight "Sounds of the Forest" as an interesting project (we would love to see for gardens as well):

"We are collecting the #sounds of #woodlands and #forests from all around the world, creating a growing soundmap bringing together aural tones and textures from the world’s woodlands.

The sounds form an #OpenSource library, to be used by anyone to listen to and create from."

I'm pretty sure there's some rule at DELL and other PC monitor manufacturers that all input ports must be in the most inconvenient location and also extra deeply recessed with just enough space your fingers don't fit

Reality-denying runs strong with nerds.

Once they made up their mind about a technology (be it crypto, VR or AI) things like facts and logic won’t sway them from “knowing” their chosen tech will save humanity or whatever.

Perhaps this is why so many become enamored with right-wing politics, where denying facts and perverse logic is celebrated.
