uh were any of you people who signed up to #threads actually paying attention to the onboarding flow?

This is how your lie when you do marketing. Here ASUS made it look like the Steam Deck was barely more powerful than the Switch, by making 0.39 tflops almost equal to 1.6 by not respecting the scale. That's the oldest trick in the book, and that's very low.

Cookie popups are corporations' way of protesting against the GDPR.

The GDPR doesn't even apply to all cookies. Only the ones that track you. No tracking cookies, no popup necessary.

Say what you want about how handles privacy (it's bad), but the fact that is a) mobile only, and b) is not released in the EU due to not being able to follow the EU's basic privacy laws says a lot about it on release. I'll stick with Mastodon and Pixelfed, thank you.

@fribbledom It's illegal in the EU, anyway, because data collection.

"Threads is a mobile-only experience at the moment and users can only make posts, write comments and follow people on the platform's mobile app."

You lost me at "mobile-only" 🙃

We've said it before but here it is again. It is truly amazing seeing and hearing of all kinds of mutual love and support organically traveling out there from you all.

It's probably obvious to move of you, but a big difference between the commercial social media platforms and the fediverse is that as those commercial platform grow, they get additional revenue from ads, from selling personal information, and otherwise monetizing their users. While that is turning out to not actually pay the bills for them, in the fediverse, just about every instance is run by volunteers and funded by donations or out of the volunteers' pockets. It's a labor of love and a hope for a better future. When traffic grows, we need to expand our capacity.

That is why I am asking, if you are able, please consider donating to the instance you on to help keep the fediverse ecosystem going. Typically the /about web page will have details on how to donate.

Note: I am well aware that many of you are not in a financial position to donate - and that is OK. We are here to serve you as well. Donations are completely optional.

You should become a patron! It gets you early access to all of my machinations and polls to vote in. And it gets me money to afford living. It turns out, giving away stuff for free doesn't pay well :<

Currently there are groups active on #Threads which mastodon.ie wouldn't tolerate on any Fediverse server, and would block that server accordingly.

We blocked #Facebook urls very early, based on the supposition that this would happen, and will continue to do so.

CW response to this post with urls of three such Threads profiles, one of which has been given verified status by Threads. The examples all involve transphobic organisations.

Threads, Twitter, and Bluesky: Our billionaire is better than your billionaire.

Mastodon: You actually don't need a billionaire at all.

Threads, Twitter, and Bluesky: Hold on, we have to ask our billionaire if that's true.

@thomasfuchs honestly, I’m this fucking close to registering officialmastodonsignup.com and putting together a friendly needs-assessment wizard with blurple gradients and cute stick figure illustrations that ends at the signup page of a suitable instance with the fields already filled out

Threads has crossed 50 million signups and I’m highly annoyed that Mastodon’s signup flow is still super clunky—after years of begging the project to do something about it (it’s better than it used to be, but there’s still lots of room for improvement).

the best thing about the #fediverse and #mastodon are unironically the #bots !

im really glad that we have social media that isnt hostile towards them since they can be pretty cool
