current events, thinks and feels

hey, y'know that feeling, like you're not convinced you really have any idea what's actually happening in the world right now, like you're not really sure what the world at large will even look like at this time next year? not even your neighborhood?

you're not alone. don't think you are. anyone who tells you differently is trying to take something from you, whether it's obvious what they want or not.

literally no one ever has been through this combination of all this before now, and you're doing the best you can with what you've got to work with.

did someone say spacex?

fun fact: there's a mission in watch dogs 2 where you hack spacex

it's not called spacex, but it's obviously a rip-off of spacex

programmers do a curious shuffle between meta levels.

at first there was only the machine itself, and to do anything you had to work directly on the object level. literally rewiring the physical machine to let current flow through the right set of semiconductors to get the computation you wanted.

then we went up a meta level, and could now describe what rewiring we wanted done, and the machine would do it while computing the answer. machine code is actually not the most fundamental level!

then we took that and wrote machine code that writes machine code based on notation that could generalize across machines.

and now here's the bit that makes it a shuffle instead of a walk in one direction... we could take that same notation and make it map to a different lower meta level. this program could be made to translate to different machine code for a different machine entirely than where it was originally!

and so it's possible to build both up and down from wherever you are in the stack!

"Im 18, in the middle of this crisis, my parents have kicked me out. I'm now lugging around possessions and couch hopping. I could use the money for food and assisting in getting me places to stay. I just enrolled back into high school and now have no steady place to do anything. I'm unemployed currently. And i just recently had a cystoscopy for a kidney stone and discovered I have a bulging lumbar disc. I'm searching for a job right now and have been but its difficult"

There's a wall in Seattle that is famously covered in used chewing gum.

To try and help raise relief funds for Seattle restaurant workers, someone has set up gumwall.co/ allowing folk to donate to remove virtual gum from a virtual wall for a dollar per piece removed.

I support this.

However, that's not why I bring it to the 'verse's attention.

Nope, I think you'll be more interested in their typographical choices.

how fucked and/or perfectly appropriate is it that people are learning tech only because tech led to video games

is this the secret? do we just need to gamify ethics somehow? is that possible?

financial help request

I feel like I've imposed on the fediverse's generosity too much already, but the truth is that I'm about to run out of money, even with Patreon coming in at the beginning of next week.

So I have to ask for your help. Any amount helps - and I appreciate boosts and other methods of spreading the word too.

Thank you. :blobheart:

sorry, I do not make the rules

I've half-joked before that "I am better at following instructions than people are at giving them" but it's really, really true.

People radically overestimate how complete and correct any given system of instructions is. Not only do they radically underestimate how weird edgecases can be, they fail to notice situations where two rules conflict — they simply follow rule C and ignore rule E, but when asked they would say that rule E has no exceptions.
