I will never forget my ex, on seeing that my knees weren't working, and that I asked for their arm to help control the worst of the limping, told me with condescension that "people like me" needed to give "real people" like them prior notice in writing of any assistance I might need so that they, the real people, could decide if what I was asking was "appropriate."

I've always had crappy knees. They used to only react to specific triggers -- airplane and theater seats, mostly (and that one time I wore a 30lb costume in dress shoes a size too small for over eight hours straight with nowhere to sit, but honestly, I can forgive them that one) -- and I could hide it from most everyone.

It is, apparently, too much to ask. I knew it would be, but god damn, this is ridiculous.

All right, if I can't have a working knee all day, can I at least avoid staggering like I'm having a seizure in front of my coworkers? Can my other knee not acquire arthritis before I actually get a referral for my physio appointment? I feel like that's not too much to ask.

#Help wanted: Could you please fill in and circulate (#retoot #reblog ) the following survey on #Mastodon and #fediverse ?

This survey is part of a #research project led by @__nate__ and me and it is aimed at understanding the reasons that motivated people to using Mastodon, their expectations in doing so and their current experience using it.

"Look, if you think the fact that my Internet of Shit door-lock failed because the company that designed it made no plan to let me into my house if they went out of business would make me sympathetic to that company, you are out of your fucking mind. If that happened to me, it would make me want to tear the lock out of my door, hunt down the CEO of the company that made it, set the lock on fire, and throw it through their front window."

If my knee could just work properly, that would be great, thanks.

Days later and I'm still trying to wash bar smell out of my clothes. Socializing is godsdamned depressing.

5. Magic? After that there was no more instruction. The people who already knew each other talked. I left after an hour.

Sorry, to qualify, this was a queer mixer at a gay bar.

Show thread

I went to a mixer the other night.

The socialization activity was:
1. Everyone write their name on a piece of paper;
2. That's it.
3. Oh wait no, give them to the organizer who put them in balloons, some 45 minutes after the activity was supposed to start;
4. Pop the balloons without announcing beforehand, forcing half the attendees outside from stress/ptsd, and the organizer having to pop balloons for them;

My coworker saw my knee going out again and was trying to get me to go to the doctor. I now have an appointment to get a referral to get an appointment to have an assessment by a physical therapist.

Nothing like that "just nuked your immune system" run-down feeling.

What you learned about "Maslow's hierarchy of needs" is...well, not specifically right.

What you learned was stolen and reconfigured. Maslow spent time with the Blackfoot tribes, learned about their hierarchy of needs, then...colonized it.

I use custom silicone musicians' earplugs when I'm out at restaurants (in the beforetimes) and conventions so I can maintain my hearing as long as I can, but Adam Savage talking about his hearing aids make them seem really cool.

Turns out the existence of an "alpha" wolf is a myth.

It was based on old/bad experiments, conducted when unrelated wolves were thrown together in captivity.

In actual wild wolves, packs are just families. There's no dominant alpha battling for the top spot -- and in the rare cases there is, it's an alpha *female* wolf.

Insert obvious implications for the use of this term in human societies.

@catvalente Same here. I used to pay twice a month, to make sure I got ahead of interest at least a little, but when I signed up for the 10-year forgiveness program I was punished for paying too often. So now I do the minimum and wait for my 10-year mark.
