And now, years on, the Angry Lawyer isn’t really all that angry anymore. He has friends - not acquaintances from the profession but real friends - again. He gets to make folks laugh, and talk about law, and look at nice pictures and marvel at amazing artists. He gets to talk to people. And every day isn’t a miserable slog.
All because, on April 11, 2017, he wrote about some dipshit’s letter. And it summoned the animal people.
So…thank you all.
Here’s to more years of this madness.
My counter tells me that I have just passed 20,000 followers here on Mastodon. Thank you for following me here, I hope I am making your Mastodon experience better. To celebrate this Round Number Milestone, I have donated $200 to RIP Medical Debt, which buys and then pays off medical debt in the US, for pennies on the dollar. $200 pays off $20K in medical debt, so that's $1 of medical debt wiped out for each of my followers here. It's a good way for me to say "thank you."
"When I tell it it's wrong, ChatGPT tries again and gets more correct!"
No. It learns which answer you stopped asking questions at. It has no idea of correct factually!
Correct for ChatGPT means *you are satisfied* with the combo of words it put together. That you liked its information-shaped sentence.
That's all. If you tell it it's still wrong, it will try again with different words instead.
You just think it's getting more right because you let it stop when it accidentally is.
"...This is the only number we have on file for you..."
Yeah well, I absolutely did not give you my work number so whatever intern looked up my work number can look up my landline in the phonebook just as easily.
That's why I have a landline - it's worth $20 a month to me to have a hole into which I can punt business calls like this.
Many thoughts on Trump's arraignment protests, January 6, and his status as a fading social media influencer:

I do not have the Founding Fathers fetish most Americans do, it’s really been more of a “choke me daddy” situation than a “father knows best” one pretty much since jump, but while we’re sniffling about the soul of America…
If they didn’t want American leaders to be held accountable to the law, they’d have done a monarchy. IT WOULD’VE BEEN A LOT EASIER THAN DEMOCRACY IN 1776, YOU KNOW.
@pluralistic: "The RESTRICT Act is a garbage law straight out of the Clinton era, a King Canute decree that potentially prohibits the use of VPNs to circumvent its provisions. America doesn't need a Great Firewall to keep itself safe from tech spying – it needs a privacy law."

"...it’s disinformation...an organized campaign of fear-mongering...I feel like the goal...is to push a reaction against sentient AI that doesn’t exist so that we can ignore all the real problems of AI that do exist...it’s...corrupting our policy discourse around the real impacts that AI is having...when Black taxpayers are being audited at three times the rates of white taxpayers, that is not a sentient AI problem. That is an automated decision system problem. We need to fix that problem."
