Days later and I'm still trying to wash bar smell out of my clothes. Socializing is godsdamned depressing.

I went to a mixer the other night.
The socialization activity was:
1. Everyone write their name on a piece of paper;
2. That's it.
3. Oh wait no, give them to the organizer who put them in balloons, some 45 minutes after the activity was supposed to start;
4. Pop the balloons without announcing beforehand, forcing half the attendees outside from stress/ptsd, and the organizer having to pop balloons for them;
My coworker saw my knee going out again and was trying to get me to go to the doctor. I now have an appointment to get a referral to get an appointment to have an assessment by a physical therapist.

What you learned was stolen and reconfigured. Maslow spent time with the Blackfoot tribes, learned about their hierarchy of needs, then...colonized it.

I use custom silicone musicians' earplugs when I'm out at restaurants (in the beforetimes) and conventions so I can maintain my hearing as long as I can, but Adam Savage talking about his hearing aids make them seem really cool.

Turns out the existence of an "alpha" wolf is a myth.
It was based on old/bad experiments, conducted when unrelated wolves were thrown together in captivity.
In actual wild wolves, packs are just families. There's no dominant alpha battling for the top spot -- and in the rare cases there is, it's an alpha *female* wolf.
Insert obvious implications for the use of this term in human societies.

"And don’t say the revolution will bring them down and restore balance. Seriously, please shut up about the revolution. Revolution should be nightmare fuel, not visions of post-scarcity sugar-plums. There won’t be a revolution in the west any time soon, and if there was it wouldn’t restore shit except polio and feudalism. We actually have to work and solve our problems here and now, not hope the world burns down and somehow all that blood and horror comes up roses and utopia."
We need to organise and fix the world as it is. It'll be messy and far from glamorous but it's what's needed rather than some idle fantasy of leading the revolution.

This is a fascinating article--translated from Japanese, with a link to the original--from a Japanese fan who stumbled into the whole "anti" vs. "proshipping" stuff going on in parts of US fandom, with their thoughtful analysis of it for the sake of other Japanese fans who are sometimes blindsided by anti attacks. Helpful for anyone who's unaware of/confused by this particularly vicious brand of purity culture among the youth.
I can't shake the feeling I'm still writing trash, but I'm doing it and who knows, maybe it'll be trash that will catch on somewhere.
I probably won't get in, but y'know, I thought I'd stop writing after my ex. What good could I possibly be as an author, as inferior as they always said I was, without them to tell me how to be a real person.
I have now applied to three different writing places with things I wrote after they left, my own "broken and unreadable" (their words) stories, that I composed without my ex (who told me such a thing would be impossible, if I wanted to be a "real" writer)
I've been thinking about how when I was with my ex, they constantly "encouraged" me to write, and I ended up with next to nothing because their encouragement was designed to keep me controlled and working for them and their writing.
