Realizing I'm a guy who doesn't have a name but is definitely a guy. What the fuck? Well it's fine if I just borrow Damir's identity i guess

don't even get me started on the [b]security[/b] side

every day i wish web programming and networking was not so challenging a topic to wrap my head around. there are so many freaking moving parts and so much jargon

Ok yes default post setting is under

Setting > Preferences > Publishing > Post privacy

that rules

masto's opacity is something that bugs me as well, so if there's something in particular y'all are confused about LMK and I'll try to translate it in a more accessible way

Oh cool, so you Can change your default post setting somewhere in preferences, I was wondering about that

gonna become a computer nerd stereotype and drag myself upstairs for coffee so i can read this documentation better

bbcode doesn't actually show up on the mobile app I'm using lol I should go log in on browser

posting that so I can pin it. [b]allegedly bbcode works[/b]

plus you have to figure out how to handle storage – are all the posts and images being saved on the server (this space will eventually run out, and would mean old pictures get cleared out every once in a while), or are you also paying for cloud storage

a 5 to 50 user server would not be terribly expensive, but any bigger than that and it becomes more serious that it's not an impulse decision

if it seems like the route we do want to go, i do think a kinni.es masto instance would be doable. but i don't want to make that decision right away, bc it requires an amount of buy-in (both in terms of time investment and money investment)

i would not want to set it up and then have it be abandoned in a week, y'know

so posting on public timelines seems to be the equivalent of like, Server-wide Shout

"The federated timeline is a view of all the public toots your servers knows about from across the whole network (including local ones). The most common reason that something appears in the federated timeline is that someone from your server follows the author of that toot. This column moves fast, and can often be pretty wild."

I misunderstood what the "federated" timeline was originally. I'm trying to find a better definition

To be honest I find these settings very interesting and handy to me, but I can absolutely see them being confusing or opaque

I *do* find it to be just a little bit annoying to make sure I have the setting switched on every new post, but, I could also get used to it
