rant about toxic people in software dev
Reading through stuff on the APNG format and holy butts is the community toxic garbage.
So extremely full of obnoxious jerks, who rather just say "I don't change ANYTHING", than consider that maybe your initial idea was good, but other people try to improve it here and /actually make sure it's conforming to your stuff/
Like other people make a huge effort to improve the PNG format and the PNG foundation jerk just says "IT ViOlAtEs My DeFiNiTiOn"

Another note, holy butts are people assholes about APNG too.
Like the head of imagemagick just goes "It got rejected by the PNG person, so I just quote that jerk and that will be enough reasoning to not adopt that promising format" + stating "there is no APNG" (because it got rejected)

PNG only supports single image stuff.
There is a completely different format, called MNG, which you have to write and/or install their own library for and can't use it anywhere else (which is what the PNG jerk wants)
APNG on the other hand is valid PNG with additions. any libpng can parse it and just ignores the extra stuff.
So worst case you get a static image instead of an animation.

The fact that APNG is actually valid PNG is what annoys the PNG guy so much, because it violates his precious code.
Fact is though, that you have a dop-in replacement there. Worst case is that your browser just displays a single image and no anim, really
While APNG aware browsers show the animation.
For users and developers it's clearly the better choice and that's why it is more wide spread (to the agony of one guy)
