I didn't share my music here yet! So I'll fix that...

I'm still debating which place will be the best... in the meantime, two pieces I'm proud of are here: hearthis.at/rootsandengines/

And then there's my... rather unkempt Soundcloud profile. soundcloud.com/rootsandengines

(Uh, it still has my old location. Really haven't cared for it in a while!)

Enjoy! :)

Autism +

Tbh I wish non Autistic people were aware of the fact that most Autistic people don't experience Autism as a total negative. Many of us are thankful for aspects of our neurodivergence, even if those same aspects can be negatives in some situations.

I experience the world differently because I am Autistic. I get overstimulated easily, but that also makes me more able to enjoy things I love, like a good song or a walk in nature. Sometimes I fixate on details, but it makes me good at work that involves precision. The fact that my mind is a little different than average allows me to commune with animals better than NTs, as I am good at understanding not everyone has the same needs and wants as me. I am thankful for what makes me different, even if it is hard sometimes.

We don't want a cure, we want acceptance and a society that is built to work with our needs.

survey for alterhumans, otherkin, therians, fictionkin, etc (923 characters)

Emmet (theriotypical on Tumblr) is running:

"an informal survey on how #gender is experienced by folks who identify with #alterhumanity, especially how it’s experienced in relation to alterhumanity. it features questions about #SpeciesDysphoria, #GenderDysphoria, and discourse related to the two topics. if you fall somewhere under the umbrella of 'alterhuman' you are welcome to take this survey, whether you’re #trans or not."

(Hashtags mine.) Emmett notes, "#alterhuman is being defined as an umbrella term that covers #fictionkin, #otherkin, #therians, and any #nonhuman identities in general" (again, hashtags mine. I'm adding 'em since I want more folks to see this post, & that's the only way to make it searchable on Mastodon).

It's open until July 1, 2019. I sent in a survey, & I hope you do, too, & then retoot this post! It's here:

Two great #WomenInSTEM: Computer scientist Katie Bouman and Margaret Hamilton.

Katie with her awesome stack of hard drives for #EHTBlackhole image data 😍.

Margaret and her Apollo Guidance Computer source code 📚.

I'm looking for an #Icelandic grammar book either in English or German. More a systematic overview where I can look things up than a lesson-by-lesson textbook.

Boosts welcome, takk fyrir :)

Does anyone has tipps for me how to deal with social anxiety in an university setting?

Ableism

Don't know if I could word this better but I'm disappointed that the stim toy craze didn't result in any more acceptance of how Autistic people generally stim. I've seen no conversation whatsoever about how big physical stims like flapping or rocking are important to us. I enjoy fidget cubes as much as the next person but I'm bitter that my main stims are still pathologized.

"You know the old joke about how this future is stupid, because people need to charge their books and cigarettes?"
"Ha, yeah."
"Well, I need to charge my brain. Can I have the lead?"
"Dude, I'm charging my heart."
"You're on 92%."
"Gotta make it home. Can you wait?"
"For what?"

Rainbow Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus deglupta) trees, native to Southeast Asia, look like something from a fairytale. Their beautiful trunks are a result of how their bark grows.

As the trees grow, they shed flakes of bark, revealing bright green, young bark underneath. Slowly, this fresh bark ages and fades though a variety of colours – blue, purple, pink, orange, and finally a dark maroon colour. This final dark coloured bark falls away, repeating the cycle.
