I display a lot of socially desirably behaviour, I suspect as a result all that. If what you say gets difficult responses it eventually becomes easier to just shut up entirely. It has gotten to the point where close people genuinely didn't know what I like and have asked twice to confirm I really wanted something. I'm also very careful in word choice now.

For me it's less about a lack of confidence in myself, but a lack of confidence in or fear of the reactions of others.
