So does the whole at part of Mastodon not actually matter and you can just follow whoever from wherever and it's just like email? That's pretty alright.
@Thaminga Alright, so instances set up how they want to collaborate with other instances and then it's all set up by the people running the instance. That's pretty good then!

Here at computerfairi.es we've got a list of instances that we choose not to federate with (practical offshoot, you can't talk to people on them, but they also can't harass you)
Also each instance has its own rules, so what's okay on one instance might be not be okay on another

@Baxter Sorta~ Most instances keep a blacklist of instances you can't really interact with (in most cases because they breed harassment/just don't moderate shit), some like this one have a whitelist policy instead where you can only talk to a (usually pretty huge) list of instances, with the remainder needing to request federation first.
