The Haunting of Hill House was....good. It was great. I'm not usually one for horror, generally, and there was a fair share of scary moments in the series and a handful of jump scares - but it wasn't over the top. And it was all settled around this emotional core of a family and of connection and of trauma and of longing that grounded it all.

I'd watch horror all the fucking time if there was more like this. Fuck me, I don't think I've watched a show that good in such a long time.

@meimeimeixie I've been intending to gush about this at some point today! I watched it in two sittings over the weekend, and was absolutely blown away by it.

I'm a big horror nut and love trying to dig up hidden gems, but this... was easily one of the best things I've seen. We desperately need more stuff like this.

@Chel

>We desperately need more stuff like this.

I can't get over how accurate this statement is. I was really hesitant to watch because I'm not a horror (movie) person but I sucked it up and watched because I loved the novel and I'm so SO glad that I did. It's so well acted and so tightly written and the payoff was so worth it. Some of the big reveals took me completely by surprise while also being right in my face the whole time and I love LOVE LOVE when a show does that.

@meimeimeixie I think it's a wonderful example of what horror can be. Horror isn't something that has to be built on a foundation of gore, cheap scares, or exploitation. It can be beautiful, just as beautiful as any other genre.

I definitely agree with you regarding the big reveals - I feel like everything involving Nellie was a prime example of this.

It sounds like the novel is worth picking up as well?

@Chel The novel is...VERY different. Some of the themes and broad strokes are the same, some of the characters share names and a few characteristics, and there's a haunted house. That's, more or less, where the similarities end. It's a great book and well worth a read though. (Though honestly, read We Have Always Lived in the Castle by the same author if you had to pick one book by Jackson. That book is.....chilling.)

Any other horror recommendations in a similar vein to Haunting you can offer?

@meimeimeixie Sounds like they're both worth picking up - I've always intended on reading more horror, but haven't really ever known where to start... so, I appreciate the recommendation. :blobuwu:

As for recommendations that I can offer... honestly, I'm coming up a bit dry I'm afraid. I'll let you know if anything comes to mind however!
