…it just dawned on me. Whilst I'm no electrician, plugging 12v lights into a device that requires 12v to run doesn't sound like a good idea.

@Morgan wire them in parallel, not series, and make sure power supply can supply enough current for both circuits simultaneously

@Morgan nope, should be fine because it's wired in parallel

@Morgan (easy example of this is a power strip, which always has the same voltage no matter how many things you plug into it)
