@Alyx I THINK what the deal was is that typically this was around the time when the maximum speed of a pc was like... 25 mhz or something. maybe 66 tops... So I guess to preserve cpu lifetime (because most chips didn't need/use heatsinks or fans and were okay with passive cooling from jsut their surface) they underclocked the cpu by default, sothe cases often had a Turbo Switch that would ramp it up to full speed??

that's just my theory tho

@Alyx of course these days they're probably completely unnecessary since basically I'm pretty sure 99% of people who owned a pc with a turbo button just left the damn thing constantly in turbo mode anyway. because...
