Ok so people have pointed out that technically the avatar is not centuries old, as time flows differently in Britannia compared to Earth. Yes, true, but The Avatar has EXPERIENCED several centuries of events.

@LANthus you ever think the avatar sees that glowing red gate in their garden sometimes and is like "aw fucksake, What the FUCK NOW??"

@a_breakin_glass @LANthus Lord British summoning the Avatar to deal with the latest crisis and the portal just... stays open for hours... nothing comes through. Lord British awaits. It's days later, still the portal is there.

Years pass. Britannia falls. Lord British has long been deposed. new civilisations arise, the portal still stands, in a sealed crypt, in which Lord British was thrown to await his "saviour" in a cruel punishment for his hubris.

@a_breakin_glass @LANthus suddenly, one day, the Avatar finally pops through the portal, looking surprised as all hell. "Oh shit sorry guys I was gonna come but like, this whole thing happened at the same time and I moved house and totally forgot... and... uh... what the..."

They find Lord British's skeleton, having written a final message in the dust: "I waited... I waited for you, Avatar. All is lost. Why?"

Avatar shrugs, snags the crown, goes back, sells it for cashmonies.
