@Felthry Translation wise? ...I dunno. Never managed to get a copy back then. Gameplaywise? Avoid. The load times are absolutely ridiculous ><;
@Nine yeah the psx version was how we first played chrono trigger, ffiv, and ffvi though we never got into v on it
@Felthry I played an emulated version of 6 (well... 3US really) first, so when I saw 6 on the PS1 I was like "OOOH I GOTTA GET THAT! LEGIT COPY!!" and then I tried playing it and it was physically painful.
Any time a battle started, ANY time I went into a town or out of a town, ANY time I went to the MENU... five second load times. It was absolutely ridiculous.
@Nine yeah it's pretty terrible
not sure what the definitive version to get is really. probably the gba one?
@Felthry From what I've heard, the best thing to do is get a Final Fantasy 3 US SNES rom, and then patch it with the Ted Woolsey Uncensored patch apparently? That makes it basically Final Fantasy 6 but actually in english and with bug fixes as well by all accounts, and fixes some of the music and instrumentation, as well as tweaking the opera scene to rhyme better.
@Nine I guess that patch on a repro cart is probably the way to go for having a physical copy of FFVI
or probably the GBA version if you want an official one
@Felthry As for Final Fantasy 5, apparnetly the GBA one IS good, but the retranslation is... ... ugh it's pretty cheesy and there's some AWFUL dialogue in it. just, facepalm worthy dialogue really. Other than that though it's rock solid.
@Nine you can get repro carts of a version with the music fixed to be more accurate to the SNES original too, which is apparently a complaint people had about it
(source: we own one. i think the sound is the only change)
@Felthry Oh yeah definitely, the patch I applied to this GBA rom fixes the music. It's not PERFECT, but... it's nigh indistinguishable at least for the music as far as I can tell.
@Nine that's another side effect of playing CT on the psx: the sound effects from the SNES version sound *wrong* to us
@Felthry Honestly all the PS1 early Final Fantasy re-releases are kinda garbo, except the Final Fantasy Origins set (1 and 2). 5 and 6 on PS1 are... so bad. ESPECIALLY 6.
