in No Man's Sky, there's this movement exploit called punchjumping, where you punch the air then use the forward momentum from doing so to nudge your jetpack into pushing you forwards instead of up, rocketing you across long distances at great speed. it's essential for getting around planets on foot, as things can be very far apart, and just running speed isn't fast enough to get around to all of it.
when they patched it, everyone got so mad they put it back in, and then later when they created the concept of exo mechs you can walk around in, they literally gave the mechs the ability to natively single-button punchjump. If that's not a fully Ascended Bug, i don't know what is.
I just wish they'd add it to the tutorial. It's not such a weird bug that it wouldn't make sense in universe, you've just gotta frame it as "using momentum to guide your jetpack". Newbies not being able to learn basic quality of life features just because they weren't intended mechanics is awful, and this isn't the first place I've seen it.
@V I had no idea about this, next time I play it (later today nmost likely lol) I'm gonna try it out :D
@Nine Yay! My gf who's played since launch luckily told me about it, I wouldn't have known either. Game changing.
(The proper technique is a punch and then a split second later holding your jetpack button, as close together as possible. My best distances are when they're *almost* simultaneous, but truly simultaneous doesn't work. Also, make sure to pay attention to your trajectory - you can fling yourself off a hill and take fall damage, for example.)
@V speaking of launch... I...
I have this weird memory of NMS... like, when it was early on and I cannot tell if I dreamed or imagined it, or if this is a real thing but...
...
you know how the terrain manipulator extracts resource deposits from the terrain via voxel manipulation?...
...did early game resources from mineral rocks used to do the same thing with the mining laser? Like, the objects were voxels and you'd chip away at them rather than just shooting them until they exploded?
@V like, I cannot shift this memory from my mind of the mining beam working like the terrain manipulator and mineral objects just being big voxels of the material that you "mine" with the laser instead of carving big shaped chunks otuta the terrain.
@Nine I feel like you may be onto something. I noticed something similar in this video https://youtu.be/1NjftkU7CRQ at 0:59?
@V oh my god yeah, that's exactly the thing I remembered almost. Though the voice activation thing is new on me.
Jeez how long ago WAS that?? It's even got the old names for elements and the older UI (back when Ferrite was just called Iron)
@V that's super cool stuff though! I'm glad I hadn't just imagined it ^^ was almost certain I was getting it mixed up with another game entirely. It's also kinda wild that the game has so radically changed from launch.
Does voice attack work with nms still given the changes made?
@Nine It's by default set up to work with the original game, but it's also fully customizable, so I fixed it. And there wasn't much that needed changing.
