@Gleng2 OK, but what if there's an account you followed, and you wanted to follow it, and it's giving you information that you want to have, but all the posts - the constant, never-ending stream that overwhelms everything else. I unfollowed. And I feel guilty, because it's important, but I just can't.
@ScottSoCal Another thing that I do is set up a separate "Home List" and switch back and forth between the standard Home screen or even have them both up at the same time as Pinned Lists. You can easily move folks on or off your home list whenever you want to clean up your incoming messages.
This helps me to be more engaged with my core group of folks that I like to carry on conversations with; and yet still keep in touch with everyone I'm following.
@Gleng2 That's a good idea - thank you. I'll give that a shot.
@ScottSoCal Sounds great!
Great strategy.
I will need to take a day off to work through my follows and set up lists, including a core list.
The aim is to maintain control over my timeline and to keep engaging with the people whose posts I read. All mastodon customs are there to support the primacy of actual dialogue with specific others over mere broadcasting. At any given moment, the timeline must remain "familiar". Each list can become one such timeline.
@the_roamer @ScottSoCal Glad to hear it. Whatโs nice is that you can add new ones, and change them up on the go. Just added a new one for my Top 10 or so Top Users to follow to really zoom in. Also helps me to get more accustomed to how certain users boost the things I like to see and post the things I like to boost and then put these in tightly focused small groups.
@ScottSoCal You can always mute them in your timeline and then go to theirs for information. Muting here can even be set for specific periods of time. I do that occasionally when some issues (like war for example) just get to be too overwhelming.
And you can also turn off their boosts with a simple click - maybe this is more to the point here.
