I hope that there is still room for idealists, who think we can and should still strive for a government for the people and by the people. Real change is slow and generational, it isn't flashy, it's hard work.

I don't know exactly how to celebrate my country right now, but I'll raise my glass repeatedly to the people who are still trying when it feels hopeless, to the true patriots who fight for human rights and not corporate greed.

There is goodness in the world, even if it doesn't always feel like it, so I'll celebrate courageous acts of kindness, people who defend those who cannot defend themselves, people who stand up when others tell them to sit down, thank you for your service.

It might be nice to call out some people who are doing good work for other people, doesn't have to be political.

I've always admired Rep Katie Porter, watching her stand up to corporate bullies has always been a delight.

@RickiTarr One of the hardest parts of moving recently was losing Katie Porter as my representative. She is unbelievably rad and I hope she's California's next senator.

When she gets out her whiteboard, I lean in, because I know it's going to be good.
