For the past year I’ve been in a quandary about my petrol powered car. I’ve had it since 2 months before the kids were born and the repairs are getting more expensive.

We walk to the city (it’s only 15 minutes away!) but I drive to get to work which has moved to a business park out of the city.

Realistically with two 8 year olds and a job, I can’t live without a car…much as I would like to.

So today I’m buying a used electric car. It’s the least worst thing I can do right now…

We installed solar on the house first, then replaced the hubs' car with an EV (he had the oldest hybrid, with the lowest fuel efficiency). Now we're running the house and charging the car with solar. Next year his car will be paid off, and we'll get me an EV. After that we're replacing (in no particular order) the gas cooktop, the gas water heater, the gas home heater. One step at a time.

@ScottSoCal i’d love to be able to put solar on our roof, but we’re end of terrace and I fear we have very little roof space actually the right way. But for those that can, I think this is absolutely the way to go.

You can find some great deals on used EVs. Hubs' car was only 6 months old with 2500 miles on it, but I got it for $12K less than new. I'll be looking for the same kind of thing for mine, when I start shopping.

@ScottSoCal we’ve managed to get a good deal here in the UK. I don’t think people realise how much they have come down in price.
