What are some “social rules” that shocked you to find out?

The problem I run into again and again is that my mode of empathy is to relate it to something I've experienced. That comes across as narcissistic.

I think this can work though, it depends on the person you are talking to.

That's my instinct too, to try to relate it with an experience I feel shows that I have at least some understanding of a similar feeling. Current NT norms are just to express stock abstract phrases that to me seem like empty words bereft of genuine connection.
