@melivia @ScottSoCal @actuallyautistic I had a copy of the writer's guide for Voyager, and it's full of stuff that never makes it into the shows -- for one thing, it emphasizes that writers should avoid nerding out on the details.

One of the details that struck me is that most of the volume of Starfleet ships is empty, and can be filled in quickly with modular units as needed for a given mission.

I had to make a lot of assumptions while doing it. I assumed each of the sections is self-contained, and required a series of decks for power, air circulation, etc. Deck height of 4 meters, allowing piping, ductwork, infrastructure outside of living space. Same for "columns" between decks - Jeffries tubes - to allow access and maintenance. It still left a big chunk of real estate.
