So if I wanted to be a DBA for scientific databases (preferably biology) is that a realistic job market? And how would I break into that? What SQL variety is industry standard? Are there many remote positions?
#databaseadministrator #biology #sysadmin #jobthoughts
@sheogorath ah so it would easier\best to get a sysadmin job at a org that does biology work and specialize from there then?
@sheogorath that makes sense, thank you for taking the time to share info.
@budsofstone The DBAs I know come from the sysadmin side (but this might be bias, because I come from there as well). There are probably also some coming from the developer side of things.
But either way, yes, usually DBA is a specialisation and not the junior position you enter after school or alike.
And you have to ask yourself what is more important to you, the biology part or the DBA part, because otherwise you might just end up being a DBA at a random org or a HPC admin at a biology org.
