@kristoff @Em @raf the advantage of declaring Europe no longer a separate continent would be scientific accuracy, and a deconstruction of self aggrandizing white supremacist ideology pushed by said area.
And Europa is only named that is because Simon Marius, was German and there for believed too be more intelligent by Europe than Persian astronomers that discovered it before him.
The area doesn't need a special name. Its on the Asian tectonic plate. But could very easily be called western asia.
@budsofstone @Em @raf
As said, you are factual correct. the problem is that western Asia already exists:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Asia
If you would make Europe Western-Asia, then you would need to rename what is now Western-Asia.
We could use Western Eurasia, .. but then what is the difference between that and Europe?
Anycase, if you based it all on just the techtonic plates, you need to split up Asia to exclude India and the Arabian part, and you also need to split ip Africa.
And the Levant would then be Africa, not Asia.
But let's be honest. tectonic plates are things that move at cm or mm per year. It's not really something that makes a lot of sense on the human scale.
You can devide up the world based on continous land-mass, but then Eurasia and Africa would form one unit.
In the end, every division you make is just stupid in one way or another.
B.T.W. interesting into on Europa (the moon)
@budsofstone @Em @raf OK, you may be factually correct, the question then would be "if you cannot call what we now call 'Europe' as such, how would you call it?"
West-Asia? That is already taken.
Trans-Ural Asia?
What would be the advantage of use these names over just using what we use now, the name "Europe" ?
And let's face it. Living in a part of the world that actually has the same name as one of the few other places in the Solar System that might harbor life. How cool is that!!!!
