Does anybody sell a dumb streaming box outside of Roku ? Like I want to be install Netflix as an app and watch it on my TV. But I otherwise dont want to login to google/amazon/apple ?

Failing that is their a #Floss solution here that would also be low maintenance and user friendly on my family.

@trashheap my first thought is arduino board with linux with flatpak or ubuntu mobile with snap

@budsofstone @trashheap I think you'd need something a lot beefier. A recent Rasperry Pi might do it in a browser window (no app). Everything else requires a log in or a shady Android install.

@joe @budsofstone Ive been mulling over the Raspberry Pi or other SBC w/ Full screen browser.

The couch experience seems really clunky though. I wish there was some sort of webstandard which would make these site browseable with a controller or TV remote.

@trashheap @budsofstone It's not a good option, requires a special mouse at best.

@joe @trashheap i mean ive done it before and known other people who do, single board computers are plenty powerful enough to run streaming at 1080p @ 60f which is higher quality than you get with netflix anyway. I recommend a mini bt keyboard/trackpad for controlling it. You can make it autostart any one of the streaming services from boot. openelec linux might be a good option if you are looking for a more simple gui with apps front and center. There are plenty of other htpc distros as well.

@trashheap libreelec with kodi is another popular option.
i prefer a more tranditional os, but im a luddite uber nerd that does most things from the terminal. So my prefs are probably not most peoples.

@budsofstone Ive actually got a lot of experience with Kodi from about a decade ago. However, my experience was that Streaming service plugins would often break or were unstable. Has that changed?

@trashheap im not sure, i think mlooking through PRs and community forums would be the best for figuring that out

@budsofstone @trashheap You have to be careful of which browser you use for these things. Some won't support DRM at Netflix and others are too slow. Many have issues playing YouTube in Firefox over a handful of frames per second on a Raspberry Pi 5
