insane behaviour from AMD asking me to install a 10.5GB chat bot to ask it what my GPU temperature is

@lion even better because the answer will then always be "high" due to the asking

@lion does it ... does it have a whole LLM to run locally?

@lion my feeling is that is both:
- horrifying (10 GB for something that doesn't need a chatbot)
- least horrible way to use an LLM (is at least local)

@lion AMD-CHAT: “Your current GPU temperature is a hell of lot higher now that I’m running on it!”

@lion Wait, AMD wants you to run a local LLM for support? That is wild.

@rlounsbury @lion where did the original post say anything about support?

it's just a local LLM built into their app

@lion what would my gpu temp be if you weren't running on it?

@deoan @lion, 43× the speed of light an accelerating. That's definitely a fast GPU.

@lion, what? Surely the answer's to run sensors(1) or a GUI equivalent…

@lp0_on_fire@social.linux.pizza @lion@computerfairi.es yep. and if you want to ask "how to increase fps", the answer is always "decrease settings", or if that doesn't work, "buy a new gpu". nothing needs to be more than a comfortable amount above your monitor's refresh rate

@lp0_on_fire @lion nvtop is also great (contrary to what one would believe based on its name, it also runs on amdgpu)

@lion Will it use the GPU to make up an answer for the question?
Because that would make asking it for the current GPU temperature especially stupid.

@lion@computerfairi.es thanks to new CPU frequency pinning technology (running the AI locally), we can simply hardcode the result as 95 degrees

i have no idea if the AI is local

@lion finally. i have been laying in bed sleepless wondering what global experience i had enabled. finally there are answers

@lion the whole fucking package is kinda insane. If you let the keep my drivers up to date option active it will not just download the driver and then prompt you. No it will just start installing whenever.

@Jonly @lion is that why i keep getting random AMDAutoUpdate.exe command prompt windows

@tay @lion could be
I just know it did it once and failed at it and then open gl part of driver was gone.
Additionally it just does the monthly ones. The ones in between for games you gotta hunt on their website anyway.

Does it contain an entire model in the bot? Does it load stupid model when you ask it a question?

..it's the size of an entire consumer hard drives from 15 years ago
@mangeurdenuage @lion @djsumdog Even 500GB HDDs were generally available in 2010, even though 200GB, 120GB and 80GB HDDs were much more common even in 2010.

@lion@computerfairi.es "Your GPU temperature is... now much higher than it was before."

@lion Of course, it will increase the temperature of your GPU 10°C every time you give it a query, so it can't even answer correctly.

@lion AMD spy chip with the chatbot is... a very bad idea.

@lion "The GPU temperature is...

Well, now, as I'm thinking about it, its actually getting pretty hot in here!"

@lion@computerfairi.es I love

How do I increase my FPS
And they are like oh easy, just run a whole fucking LLM in the background.

@lion
If this is within the AMD Radeon Software, the answer is "click the button labelled performance", which brings you to performance graphs... sigh

@lion I feel like 10GB was more than my first 8-10 computers had in drive space combined.

@lion Is it one of those things you can just completely wipe/purge from your hardware and software environment ? Or are they being pushy with it ?
I refuse to ever use any "desktop app" for simplistic stuff like this

@yama the chatbot itself is an optional install, the software that's advertising it to me is "AMD software adrenalin edition" which i think you don't have to have either, you can just install the drivers
